The developer BioWare pulls the switch to a Free2Play model for the online role-playing game Star Wars: The Old Republic into consideration. However, no decision is currently.
Currently based online role-playing Star Wars: The Old Republic still on a classical subscription model with monthly fees. However, the developer is struggling to BioWare for some time with declining numbers of players. In early May, the team announced that the number of subscribers had dropped over the past three months to 400,000.
This is why BioWare is examining several ways to counteract this negative trend - even a Free2Play model seems to be no longer excluded. This goes at least from an interview the lead designer Emmanuel Lusinchi out with the magazine GamesTM.
"The MMO market is very dynamic, and we must also be dynamic. (...) We are currently reviewing the Free2Play model, but I can not give any details. We must be flexible and adapt to what is happening around us."
Although specific information laid before Lusinchi not, but apparently BioWare pulls the switch to a Free2Play model for Star Wars: The Old Republic seriously considered. Why not? Nevertheless, some examples of the recent past have shown that such a decision may well lead to success - see Lord of the Rings Online.
